The Alaska Center and The Alaska Center Education Fund board and staff grieve the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black lives. We call for accountability for those who have taken these lives and continue to perpetuate violence under the badge of the law.
Violence against people of color includes the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, as well as ​harassment and violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander communities based on racism and irrational fear, and the ongoing and illegal imprisonment of Latin American families at our border whose health and rights are tread on daily.
Historic systemic and pervasive racism and traumas of colonization make people of color and Indigenous communities in our country fear for their families’ health, safety, and lives every single day. The current climate crisis and health pandemic are additionally disproportionately destroying the lives of communities of color.
As an organization that works to engage, empower and elect Alaskans to stand up for our clean air, water, healthy communities, and a strong democracy, we have a responsibility to stand with those most affected by racist structures and systems. We recognize the leadership of frontline organizations and individuals, and we stand among those calling for justice, accountability, and an end to violence.
We additionally commit to educating ourselves, our families and loved ones on the historic and current racism across our state and country, to understand and unlearn white supremacy culture and practices that perpetuate systems of racism, and to advocate for anti-racist policies and support elected leaders that are willing to address these issues.
