Sofia Astaburuaga – A Bright Light for Youth Action

  • Sofia Astaburuaga joined AYEA in 8th grade and has since been a leading proponent of climate advocacy. For five years, she’s used her voice to ensure AYEA sets their sites high; from campaign goals to meeting politicians. If you live in Anchorage, you’ve heard Sofia speak at local events – she’s a passionate speaker who represents the power of youth.

Raised in Chile, she has a unique perspective on climate activism. She sees how climate struggles pressure communities globally and this instills a sense of urgency in her fight for justice. It has also made her a boundary-pushing leader in AYEA. Sophia served as a Youth Trainer at AYEA’s annual youth summits and continues to mentor new students on community organizing, public speaking, and the ins and outs of the Alaska legislature.

  • During Sofia’s tenure:

AYEA met with newly elected Governor Bill Walker to re-establish the Climate Change Task Force.
The Governor created a Climate Leadership Team with a dedicated seat for a young Alaskan
AYEA delivered a rulemaking petition on climate to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation

Sofia graduates this year and is looking ahead to new endeavors, but you will always catch her on the forefront of the struggle for social and environmental justice. Gracias por su pasión, dedicación y compromiso, Sofia. ¡Te extrañaremos!

“The most important thing I learned was that no matter what your background is we all want a better, more promising environment for our future generations.” – Sofia, 2017 CCS
