Anchorage, AK- In response to President Joe Biden’s executive actions on climate today, The Alaska Center issued the following statements from Government Affairs Director Louie Flora, and Political Director Jenny Marie Stryker:
“This is a huge day for climate action. We see real hope in the future of climate work in Alaska with a federal government who is willing to make strong steps to ensure a healthy climate for future generations.” said The Alaska Center Political Director Jenny-Marie Stryker. “Their holistic approach shines a light on the need for intersectionality in our environmental policy. As Alaskans we have seen the effect in real time on our communities, our health, our families and our economy when policy makers make decisions for us but not with us.”
“Biden’s executive actions install a meaningful and collaborative process to analyze federal environmental justice and to develop and implement reforms. The direction to every federal agency to center decision-making on equity and justice is essential--we know that climate justice requires racial justice, and we need every step to move towards a Just Transition.” said Stryker. “These actions will establish a process to root policies in the needs of low-income, black, brown and Indigenous communities who bear the brunt of pollution impacts. Biden is cementing his commitment to ensure the frontline communities most affected craft the vision for the future of climate justice.”
“This commitment is a needed stepping stone for our path as Alaskans towards a renewable economy that invests in the ways of work and life that are unique and fundamental to the health and prosperity of our communities. With our economy reeling from the impacts of COVID-19, economic stimulus locally and federally is a priority. Jumpstarting a clean energy economy will provide well-paying jobs and sustainable economic growth for the long term,” said Louie Flora, Government Affairs Director for The Alaska Center.
Stryker concluded, “These executive orders are groundbreaking and are a powerful shift in the narrative of our country. While Alaskans have been taking the lead on local climate actions for years, the Biden Administration has finally shown a federal commitment to this work and boldly shown that the time for climate action is now.”
