Why Partnerships Matter at The Alaska Center
As we witness and peacefully protest against the travesties happening around the country, including the killing of Alex Pretti last weekend, we are reminded that we, at The Alaska Center, can’t do this work alone. In Minnesota, we’ve seen strong collaborations across sectors — from organized labor, to environmentalists, to faith leaders, and more — work together to fight back against authoritarianism. We stand with Minnesota and are inspired by their resistance.
In our work, we work in partnership to achieve our goals of engaging, empowering, and electing Alaskans to stand up for our clean air and water, healthy communities, and a strong democracy. Our goals are bigger than any one organization. They’re bigger than The Alaska Center, and that’s why we must work hand-in-hand with other organizations that share our values and our vision for Alaska.
Through partnerships, we are able to take our limited amount of financial resources, time, staff capacity, and energy and multiply it to make it even more meaningful. No single organization can do it all, but together, we can win against the well-funded outside corporations fighting to extract every drop of profit they can out of Alaska.
The Alaska Center has a long history of partnership, both forward-facing and “behind-the-scenes,” which have helped to increase our impact and amplify our message. Our work with Resource Rural and Alaska Public Interest Research Group has helped highlight stories of innovation through adversity — inspiring other communities to pursue their own clean energy projects. Because of the relationships we’ve developed while advocating for renewable energy, we’ve made it easier for organized labor and other partners to step up and speak out. And because we work with so many who care about the health of our democracy, we’ve been able to educate the public about ranked choice voting and mail-in ballots alongside the Alaska Voter Hub.
All of this work helps those of us standing up feel more connected and empowered, especially at a time when there are others actively trying to make us seem powerless. We know the power is in our hands to build the future we want, and we believe the best way to do that at The Alaska Center is through partnership.
