Emma is an Alaska artist currently based in Anchorage. Her art draws deep inspiration from the state’s landscapes and vibrant creative community. After studying studio art and sociology in Minnesota, she returned home to continue exploring her artistic practice. Her work reflects the natural world around her, capturing the beauty of Alaska’s outdoors, plants, and wildlife through drawing and painting.

#4: Sculpture by Don Decker

Don Decker is a widely respected and beloved Anchorage artist, educator, and writer with more than four decades of experience in art and art education. He holds BA, MA, and MLA degrees, and earned his MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2009.
Decker has exhibited his work in every major venue across Alaska, as well as in 17 other states. Since 1992, he has served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Alaska Anchorage, shaping generations of artists. Working across drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography, he has received numerous awards, and six of his works are held in the permanent collection of the Anchorage Museum. He also contributes regularly to the Anchorage Daily News as a monthly art reviewer.
“Wake,” carved from pine, reflects Decker’s 50-year practice in woodcutting and carving. The title refers to the movement of water, waves in an ocean or river, and captures both motion and form. Decker has shared that this piece comes from one of the finest pieces of wood he has discovered in his long search for the ideal carving material.
