What Bill 82  does

This year, Alaska's Legislature has the opportunity to update state law & provide equal rights for all Alaskans. HB 82, would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

What we have currently

Alaska currently has no state protections for orientation, identity, or expression. Accordingly, many of our community members are left vulnerable to discrimination in all aspects of their lives: emergency services - housing - healthcare - employment - education - voting access. While some cities -- Anchorage, Juneau, and Sitka -- have local ordinances protecting their residents, the majority of all Alaskans (55%) lack equal protection under the law.

Our safety and access should not be contingent on our zip code. All Alaskans have the right to be safe and thrive in their communities.

What this bill would do

When passed, many communities, like the LGBTQ+ community, would be protected against workplace, housing, and healthcare discrimination, and would have access to legal and judicial recourse in cases of orientation, expression, and identity-based discrimination.

Our protections would no longer hang in the balance on a case-by-case basis.

Why support this bill

This is a human rights issue. When communities are discriminated against, those marginalized people are put at risk for losing their jobs, homes, education, and livelihoods.

This is a democracy issue. When communities are discriminated against, residents are less likely to participate. That limits the ability for elected leaders to advocate for their constituents, and restricts the access and trust between them and their constituents.

With a matching bill in the Senate, this is our chance to ensure protections for all Alaskans, regardless of who they are or where they live.

This is our issue. These are our communities. We need an Alaska where no one is discriminated against.

This is our solution!
