West Anchorage District Plan
If you live in West Anchorage, use the Coastal Trail, or care about your parks, you should make your voice heard on this plan.
The West Anchorage District Plan is
now available for review. Implementation of this comprehensive plan will
influence local neighborhoods, the Coastal Trail, parklands, greenbelts, and
city design across large portions of Anchorage from the Spenard area to the Ted
Stevens Anchorage International Airport. If you live in West Anchorage,
use the Coastal Trail, or care about your parks, you should make your voice
heard about how these areas are developed. Public comments are
due June 10. To review the plan, click here.
It is very important that the plan ensures that:
- Long-standing airport-neighborhood impact issues are adequately addressed, including air and ground noise, air pollution, water quality, and protection of natural open space buffers between the airport, homes, and recreational areas.
- A strategy is in place for the long-term protection of the Coastal Trail and an associated greenbelt on both public and private lands, including transfer of all remaining Municipal Heritage Land Bank land along the trail to the Parks Department for dedicated parkland status.
- No land trades between the city and the airport include giving the airport dedicated Point Woronzof parkland for construction of another North-South runway west of the existing one.
- The Town Center concept centered at Spenard and West Northern Lights is well-planned, with good design for both motorized and non-motorized users.
