LED Streetlights in Anchorage

This initiative would replace 16,000 high pressure sodium roadway lights in the Municipality with high-efficiency LED fixtures.

Anchorage Assembly "sees the light" and votes 8-0 in favor of LED Streetlight Ordinance

Mayor Begich LED proposal

In August 2008, the Anchorage Assembly voted 8-0 in favor of the LED Streetlight Ordinance.

Phase one will replace 16,000 high pressure sodium roadway lights in the Municipality with high-efficiency LED fixtures. Twenty-two percent of the energy used in the U.S. is from lighting, and in our dark winters, our usage is even greater. Municipalities are in a great position to address the energy crisis on a local level, and a northern city like Anchorage will now be a leader!

This is a great investment for our environment and for the taxpayers. The upfront $2.2 million will be recouped in less than seven years and the city would then begin saving $360,000 every year in maintenance and new lights. LED light fixtures use 50% less energy than the current light fixtures and last seven times longer. In addition, LED roadway lights help to reduce light pollution that obstructs the night sky, and won't disrupt a good night's sleep like the old-fashioned high pressure sodium lights. LED streetlights will also make our neighborhoods safer for pedestrians and motorists. Under LED streetlights, both light and dark objects are more visible and distinct.

Thanks to all ACE members who participated in the "green lighting bus tour" back in March--your participation helped make this a reality. ACE members can send thanks to the Assembly and the Administration for their vision. Dare we say, the future looks bright.
