The Story of Campbell Creek Estuary

The Great Land Trust worked with the Municipality of Anchorage to protect this amazing piece of land.  The papers are signed.  The deeds are in order.  In the next few years, Anchorage residents will be able to enjoy this special piece of land.

ACE members, like you, helped to protect this unique land and ensure that the years of collaborative work results in a new coastal park in Anchorage.

Here's why ACE believes this is an important project:

This is a special and unique parcel of land.  The property contains 1/2 mile of Campbell Creek, 25 acres of coastal wetlands, and a coastal forest.  It provides access to the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge with its assortment of birds and other wildlife.  When preserved, this land will provide important habitat for salmon and other wildlife.

There are NO municipal tax dollars going to purchase this property.  The Great Land Trust has raised $6.8 million to purchase the park - as well as funds to pay for clean up, to develop a park plan, to create modest trailhead improvements and small gravel trails, as well as funds monitor and address the conservation needs of the property annually.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will help manage the property.  The agency has stated that they would manage the third of the property that is wetlands near Campbell Creek, further reducing long term costs to maintain the coastal park. 

Great Land Trust has partnered with the Municipality on many important and popular projects over the past 15 years.  Included in these projects was the purchase and donation of 30 acres at the mouth of Fish Creek on the Coastal Trail near Westchester Lagoon.  Can you imagine if this property was not protected?
