Marine Treasure Hunt
The 6th annual Alaska Ocean Festival brings together a wide spectrum of marine organizations to celebrate, inspire, and educate around the theme of our Alaska ocean resources. The Marine Treasure Hunt is vital part of our educational outreach efforts particularly toward youth and their families.
More than thirty “hands on” educational booths are set up through out the festival grounds. As kids pick up a starfish for the first time or learn about salmon spawning habits, we seek to inspire a true appreciation of the Alaska ocean that laps at our shores right here in Anchorage.
The Marine Treasure Hunt serves as an incredibly successful vehicle to attract children and families to learn as much as they can about our marine world. Festival attendees are given treasure maps which direct them to participating educational booths located amid the art and food vendors. At each educational booth, children seek the answer to a question listed on their map which corresponds with that exhibit. At each location, participant’s maps receive a stamp once they’ve correctly answered the ocean question and thus move on seeking answers to these questions until every education booth is visited.
Once maps are completed they are handed in for small prizes and also entered into several larger drawings of gift packs from participating sponsors. The Marine Treasure Hunt seeks to provide hands on ocean educational experiences which inspire participants and thus lead to a greater respect for our fragile oceans which are such a critical part of the tapestry of life here in south central Alaska.
