Eagle River Flats
The US Army is proposing to open the Eagle River Flats to more weapons testing.
Two Bad Alternatives
Fort Richardson is taking public comments on their Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to allow year-round live-fire munitions training in the Anchorage area. There are three alternatives outlined in the EIS.
Proposal 1 is the No Action Alternative, which allows training in the Eagle River Flats to continue in the winter months when the risk of contamination is lower due to frozen ground.
Proposal 2 is the Army's preferred alternative and would allow year-round munitions testing in Eagle River Flats, an estuary that supports migratory birds, beluga whales, and other wildlife. Toxic releases and noise are of concern.
Proposal 3 would impact 2,000 acres near the borders of the Chugach State Park, including clear-cutting 460 acres of trees. Over 15 miles of new roads and 8 miles of fire breaks, as well as multiple firing and observation points are proposed. Noise and access issues are of concern. Basher Community Council and Northeast Community Council have adopted resolutions in opposition to Alternative 3.
ACE supports the No Action Alternative.
