As you may know, two significant revisions of state plans and management guidelines for Southcentral Alaska are occurring.  The outcomes of these processes will determine forestry management, land use, and the overall appearance of the region for decades to come, affecting tourism, commerce, local residents, and Anchorage area residents using the Matanuska-Susitna Borough for recreational purposes.

ACE is hosting an informal workshop to provide background, feedback and tips for crafting public comments in regards to these revisions. The date of the one-hour forum is May 11 at 10am at ACE’s office at 807 G Street.

The Susitna Area Plan (SAP), developed in 1985, is being revised.  This is a comprehensive planning effort covering many familiar lands in the Mat-Su valley.  The plan will greatly influence the future of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.  The planning area boundaries, although changed somewhat from 1985, remain basically the same.  The plan has been renamed; it is now called the Susitna-Matanuska Area Plan (SMAP).

The Susitna Forestry Guidelines (SFG), developed in 1991, are also being revised.  These guidelines govern forest harvest practices on state land in the Susitna Valley that is managed by the Department of Natural Resources where Forestry is one of the designated uses.   The outcome of this revision process will influence how the valley will look in the future.

Comments for both the SMAP and SFG are due June 1, 2009.
