Alaska's Renewable Energy Potential
Abundant Renewable Energy Sources in Alaska
Wind, geothermal, tidal, solar, biomass hydro: Alaska has abundant supplies of all forms of renewable energy. These sources are spread throughout the state of Alaska and our challenge will be to find low impact, cost-effective ways to utilize the abundant sources we have.
The Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) and Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP) collaborated to develop the Renewable Energy Atlas of Alaska. Click here for more information about Alaska's renewable energy potential or to download the Atlas.

A Focus on the Railbelt Region
Well over half of Alaskans live in the "Railbelt Region" - which lies between Fairbanks and Homer, largely along the Alaska Railroad lines. These communities are tied together by a transmission grid and consume 80% of the state's electrical power. Most Railbelt electricity comes from natural gas with some coal and petroleum fired generation and hydropower. Alaska's greatest opportunities for converting to renewable energy sources are in the Railbelt.
A number of large scale renewable
energy projects are currently being investigated by public and private
entities. ACE will be watching these projects as they emerge to ensure that we get the best renewable energy projects for Alaska that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and protect our most treasured resources.

Kenai Hydro Projects: ACE has analyzed the proposed hydro projects located on the tributaries of the Kenai River and believes that these projects have too high an impact for too low of an output. Click here to find out more.
